It is a woman's right to continue or discontinue her pregnancy and Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) has been legal since 1972 in India. Any woman above 18, whether married or unmarried, can opt for an abortion.
While MTP is legal till 20 weeks of pregnancy, it is advisable to undergo an abortion in the early weeks of gestation. Should a termination of pregnancy be required for medical, social or ethical reason, it is essential that women seeking an MTP visit an authorized hospital or clinic (recognized under the MTP Act of India) specializing in such procedures. Back street abortions or quacks must be avoided. If experts do not conduct the termination, complications could occur, leading to lifelong sterility and sometimes, even death.
