SEXUALITY

Human sexuality can be defined as the ways in which one experience and expresses oneself as a sexual being. Human beings’ awareness of themselves as females or males is part of their sexuality, as is the capacity they have for erotic experiences and responses. Sexuality is an essential part of oneself, whether or not one engages in sexual activities or sexual fantasy. Read the following story of Nandini and Rakesh where they both struggle on the issues of sexuality.

Story of Nandini and Rakesh

While watching television, a convent going school girl Nandini got the feel of things how her parents react to issues of sexuality and as she entered puberty stage and wants to get some clarification from her mother, she holds back and suppresses her sexual life for fear of being labeled as ‘loose character’.  Even she is worried about terms like hymen, virginity, crush and lesbian. Meanwhile, her elder brother Rakesh has a typical concern about his identity as he gets the feeling that he is actually a girl trapped in a boy's body. His parents have beat him up for wearing clothes of Nandini occasionally and the impact of the punishment has made him nervous and confused. “Why they beat me up for nothing? They should have helped me come out of this dilemma so that I could have turned a normal boy,” says a disappointed Rakesh. He also feels attracted to other boys and is worried about his future, as he had read in some news magazine about homosexuality and bisexuality, which is not treated, as normal as heterosexuals by the society.

Had the parents of Nandini and Rakesh understood their childrens' sexuality and its development then life would have been different for their children.
